On October 6, 2017, John was heading home from the grocery store on his skateboard. Unbeknownst to him, there was a divot in the pavement, and his skateboard caught the divot, snapping his knee backwards. He initially didn't even realize he had dislocated his knee, as he has always been a careful and skilled skateboarder and has never had an issue in his previous 20 years of using a skateboard as a means of transportation. His foot never left the skateboard. He didn't crash. He didn't fall. His knee just completely gave way, destroying his ACL and LCL, detaching his hamstring, and tearing his peroneal nerve. Though the ligaments and hamstring are repairable, the damage to his nerve has left his foot and lower leg paralyzed. There is a chance that his nerve will regrow and repair itself after several years, but for the time being and for the forseeable future, John is unable to lift his foot or walk without assistance, something that may be permanent. It was an absolute freak accident that has completely changed his life.
After 3.5 weeks of excruciating pain, blood clots, Emergency Room and Urgent Care visits, neurology tests, and vascular appointments, John had surgery on October 31st to reconstruct his ACL and posterolateral corner, reattach his hamstring, and remove the scar tissue that was surrounding his nerve. According to the surgical team, this was one of the worst injuries of this kind that they've seen. John now has at least two years of physical therapy and recovery ahead of him.
Anyone who knows John knows he is not the type to sit around and ask for a hand-out, so he has already been applying to any work-from-home jobs he can find. But between the pain, sleep deprivation, weakness from blood loss, and physical therapy appointments, he has been unable to dedicate large chunks of time to work or job searching.
He will have at least $5,000 in medical bills (after insurance) and he will be out of work for at least a couple months (it has already been one month without an income since he is unable to collect disability), which is at least an additional $5,000 in lost income. He is anxious to resume normal life and get back to work, but in the meantime, it would ease a huge amount of stress to be able to pay for his medical bills and living expenses while he focuses on his recovery. Every little bit helps and is so appreciated!!
