EWH Summer Institute in Rwanda

Howdy! My name is Arya Monticino and I'm a junior at Texas A&M University studying Mechanical Engineering. This summer, I have been blessed to be accepted to the Summer Institute in Kigali, Rwanda with Engineering World Health. This is the opportunity of a lifetime for me, both in relation to my career goals and as a humanitarian effort.
According to EWH, in lower resource settings, 50-80% of medical equipment is out of service. These hospitals oftentimes have the equipment they need, but lack the resources to utilize it.
The Summer Institute is a two-month program starting in June 2018. In the first month, students receive training in both Kinyarwanda, the native language, and in repairing the medical equipment. With this training, students are assigned to a hospital where we will work to repair medical equipment and provide assistance to the hospital staff. The effects of our work will be long-lasting and quite literally save lives.
I have known since my junior year of high school that I want to work with medical devices as a career. I first attended the University of Washington, where I learned of programs such as the Summer Institute in my freshman year BIOE 215 course. I never thought that I would have the opportunity to actually attend one until the professor leading this trip, Dr. Michael Moreno, visited one of my lectures early this semester at A&M. Combined with this program being parallel to my career interests, I will have the chance to change and even save lives on this trip. I am convinced that this opportunity is one that I am meant to pursue.
I would like to ask for your support through your thoughts and prayers, but also financially. The estimated total cost of this trip is $12,000. I am currently financing this trip with support from my job, my parents, and scholarships. If you feel called to help me make this trip happen with funds, I would be eternally grateful.
