A couple of weeks ago, Eugene and Cynthia were given the news that Eugene has advanced stage 4 adenocarcinoma lung cancer. His cancer has spread to his liver and spine and some lymph nodes. He has already been to Edmonton twice for testing and to discuss a treatment plan. Chemotherapy will start very soon and perhaps radiation in the future. Those who know Eugene know him to be a kind man, dedicated father to Courtney, a talented musician and a devoted educator, tournament organizer and coach to a lot of our children. In January 2004 he answered an ad for a physical education teacher for YCS and has been teaching at Ecole St. Joseph School since then. Eugene met his beautiful wife Cynthia during a Super Soccer tournament in 2004 and they along with their daughter became a family in July 2008. Eugene is taking this news in typical Eugene style. He is taking a strong and positive attitude and will move through this with an expected joke here and there. In his own words:
But truly, I’m fine... not sure if I’m in denial or confident or hopeful or just focused on the game... but I assure you I’m the same joke cracking fool I’ve been my whole life. Maybe the best analogy I can give you is that I’m the goalie in net focused on the puck and trying to figure out where the next shot is coming from and if there’s any chance of deflections while everyone in the stands are on the edge of their seats going crazy because it’s out of their hands! I will win this damn game!!! Might not be a shutout, but I will win this game, don’t you worry!
Moving forward, this is going to be a difficult journey for them. The last thing that they need to be worried about is finances. I asked permission from them to start this page and although hesitant at first, with some coaxing, they were able to accept that there are lots of people who love them and want to be able to help in some way. If you are able, please donate and leave a message here for the Roach’s!
