A New Bike for Galen

$300 goal

Campaign created 2 months ago

Hello everybody, this is Galen (or OrangeGalen if you're from YouTube) and recently my bike was stolen. I had that bike for 14 years and was using it quite frequently, to go places/shopping/Pokemon Go etc. I had also been using it to commute to work, and it was in the shopping area I work at where it was stolen, on May 2, 2019, leaving behind one wheel and the lock that was on it. And while I can drive, it was far more cost effective to bike than to use gas, and also limits my mobility.

What I am asking for is a minimum of $300 USD (lowered it from 400, I'll make up the difference) to replace the bike. While I would ask for less (as the bike I had cost less) inflation and also the fact that they don't make that brand/model of bike anymore forces me to ask for more. I'm planning on getting a new bike from REI (Recreational Equipment, Inc.) as that's where I got my previous bike from and they have good mountain bikes there - which my old one was. And I checked online and 400 is the lowest priced bike I could find. If there's nothing there then I will be checking out a local bike shop a few blocks away from where I live.

Any proceeds will go to getting a new bike for myself, and if I somehow get over that amount, then I will use that to either get a better bike than originally planned, or buy accessories for my bike (such as another bike lock, a tail light, and smartphone holder - that last one is purely for Pokemon Go fyi). If I have extra after, I will either return it or invest in better video editing programs for my YouTube channel, giving back to everyone that helped me by giving you better edited content.

Having a bike was like having freedom to go wherever I wanted, only limited by my body. Without it, I feel somewhat trapped and very much limited. It's also the fact that it was stolen - that someone knowingly and willfully put in the effort to take it - that stings more. Anything that you donate means that there are some people who are decent in this world - for it takes many to right the wrongs of one. And I will thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I can't believe it. I actually got my bike back! Somebody just came inside my workplace with it, went to the bathroom, and I just happened to be out front and saw it there. Took it into the back, checked it and it WAS my bike - serial number and everything (except for a new front tire). The kicker is the guy had a bag of stuff hanging off the handlebar when I brought it back - inside (but not limited to) was 3 or 4 phones, a container of weed, and a file to file things off. When the man asked where "His" bike was, my manager said that the bike belonged to one of the employees, the man said that "He was borrowing it from someone" and then promptly left. Hearing that second hand since I was in the back trying to figure out if it was the right serial number and then which police number to call. And the police came just as I was leaving (granted about an hour after my shift ended but still).
It's just incredible. It's a combination of luck and criminal stupidity.

Thank you to everyone that donated, and I will be withdrawing my GoFundMe and returning your donations - as I don't need a new bike. Thank you again!

Lol, because I've been looking up bikes on REI's site, I'm now getting adds on Facebook for bikes from REI. What was that thing Zuckerburg said about Privacy?
