Eta & Iota Relief & Support for Lacayo Family

My name is Sophie Walker and I'm Brooklyn-based, fundraising on behalf of the extended Lacayo Castillo family, a Garifuna family in the Honduran municipality of La Lima that has been displaced and devasated by Hurricane's Eta & Iota.

I'm raising funds to support them in repairing their homes, the small businesses that sustain the family and community, and paying for lodging and necessities while they are displaced and out of work.

The money will be sent directly via moneygram to Honduras and I will cover the fees separately.

ABOUT THE FAMILY RECEIVING FUNDS:
Women are the sole providers and caretakers in the Lacayo Castillo family, and they are asking for support in rebuilding and repairing their homes and the businesses that supported their extended family.  Without these businesses it is nearly impossible for the family to sustain themselves.

The Lacayo Castillo's and Garifuna (Afro-Indigenous) communities broadly have been displaced and devastated by Hurricane Eta & Iota .

One member of the family ran a business from the front of her home selling food, made possible by a large stove. This stove has been destroyed, along with the roof of her home and all belongings.

Another family member ran a small convenience store, which has also been destroyed.

HOW THE MONEY WILL BE USED:
— roof and home repairs
— temporary lodging in a hotel due to displacement
— a new stove
— necessities (clothes, water, food, medication)

ABOUT ME:
I've been friends with an NYC-based member of the Lacayo Castillo family for a few years and am working with them directly to communicate with the Lacayo Castillo's in La Lima. They reached out to her asking for support during this incredibly difficult time.

In the beginning of November through a small effort I sent $330 to the Lacayo Castillo's (or 8,020.95 Honduran lempiras) via Moneygram. This has been used for emergency necessities (food, water, clothing, medication) and temporary lodging. (receipt pictured below)
