I have set up this GoFundMe campaign for those of you who have expressed the desire to help financially and for all who wish to help.
As you may know, Puerto Rico was catastrophically affected by Hurricane Maria. My parents Martin (77) and Mary (74) live in Levittown, Toa Baja.
The hurricane left the whole island without power for an estimate of 4 to 6 months. Communications are severly damaged and water service is affected as well.
As in many other communities in the island, my parents' house flooded due to a flash flood at night, with no warning and time to prepare. They had to evacuate to a shelter and upon return, they found all of their household furnishings including appliances, clothing, shoes and bedding damaged by water and mud. In addition, my mother is diabetic and insulin dependent and she was unable to take her medication with her to the shelter and is currently in ICU at Hospital San Pablo, intubated and sedated, with a reserved prognosis.
She suffered a heart attack and seizures after having her blood sugar levels above 1000.
My brother Martin and I will be taking turns going to Puerto Rico to take them supplies, clothing and food and to help them in the cleanup process, legal and insurance matters. We may also have to bring them to Florida if at all possible, while electricity, water and other services are restablished in Puerto Rico.
We will be deeply grateful for any help you can provide our family.
