Esperanza School Summer Camp Seeks Your Support!
Esperanza is a community on the Nicoya Peninsula of Costa Rica. The Esperanza School Summer Camp provides a nutritious hot lunch and structured summer camp activities for the children of Esperanza. Summer vacation is in January in Costa Rica. For camp year 2016, the camp will run from January 4-29, Monday-Friday, 8:15-1:00.
The need for a vacation program in Esperanza is strong. Esperanza is a poor community with a large number of young children who live in extreme poverty. The daily school meal is an important part of the children's diet, and in January school is closed for vacation.
Esperanza's children also enjoy the opportunity to build their skills in traditional camp activities such as sports and arts and crafts, as well as taking frequent trips to the beach.
2016 Camp Plans
In 2016 the camp will be renting two vans and drivers for even more beach trips, as well as visits to the Recycling Center, the new G Section playground, Harmony Hotel (free milkshakes for picking up plastic on the beach), Dos Lorenos Hotel swimming pool, Kitson Library, and more. Sounds like fun, huh? It is!
In addition to beach and special trips, kids will also have a period of Dance (a favorite national past-time and in preparation for Family Day, the last day of camp, when families come to watch performances), Arts & Crafts, Sports (including soccer, lacrosse, badminton and yoga) and Books, Games, and Puzzles (with super materials from the U.S. for children who see very little of these three things).
The camp served between 50-60 children each day in 2015, and we anticipate 70-80 per day this year - both because the camp was so successful last year, and because the community has grown. There are about 115 children enrolled at the school, but some return to Nicaragua during school vacation.
The schedule is designed to serve seven groups of children, ages 4-14. The camp also provides activity for seven older "counselors in training". Seven adult counselors, a life guard, and one cook later, a camp is born.

Linda Tarlow, Camp Director, founded the camp in January 2015. She organizes the camp throughout the year, and runs the camp in January. She is a volunteer. She is also the founder and president of the Nosara Food Bank, which serves Esperanza, as well as all other towns in the Nosara District. She and her husband, Alvin Rosenbaum, are retired and live in Esperanza, Costa Rica.
