Meet Lily. Lily is our beloved, gorgeous, 3 year old German Wirehaired Pointer. We are an avid rescue dog family and have fostered and rescued puppies for over 5 years through a fabulous Bay Area organization called Pound Puppy Rescue. Lily became a member of our family after we fostered her and her 5 littermates in the summer of 2011. The litter had been severely neglected and abused and were confiscated by police from a backyard breeder. They came to us starving and in critical condition at only 3 weeks of age. Miraculously we were able to save all 6 puppies and find wonderful homes for them all. Somehow we knew that Lily was meant to stay with us. She has brought us joy and silliness and lots of cuddles over the past few years.
This past summer, Lily began to have intermittent shifts to her walking and gait. It looked at times like she had something in her paw, or a stiff leg. The symptoms were subtle and came and went. In July, our vet suspected damage to her cruciate (similar to a torn ACL in humans). After a few months of limited activity and meds, there has been no change, just a steady increase in pain and immobility. A specialist has now diagnosed Lily with Bilateral Cruciate Disease - degeneration of BOTH cruciate ligaments in her back legs. She requires surgeries in both legs in order to return to normal activity. Luckily, Lily is a perfect candidate as she is young and fit and the surgery should give her her happy pointer life back. The cost, however, will be high - close to $10,000 for the combined surgeries.
We normally would not reach out for help in a situation like this, but many dear friends are urging us to do so and with costs so high, we certainly could use the help of our fellow dog-lovers and rescue fans. We are hoping that perhaps our Lily can benefit from the wonderful support and generosity that we have witnessed these past many years in the rescue world. Should this campaign be very successful and raise more money than we need, all surplus funds will be donated to Pound Puppy Rescue.
