My name is India Brooks and I am 16 years old. I have a condition called Septo-optic dysplasia (SOD), (de Morsier syndrome) which is a rare congenital malformation syndrome featuring underdevelopment of the optic nerve, pituitary gland dysfunction, and absence of the septum pellucidum (a midline part of the brain). I am legally blind, but have limited vision in which I can see shadows and outlines of objects.
My mom came across an ad which featured a new technology called eSight. eSight is electronic glasses that restore or enhance sight for people living with vision loss. You wear it like a normal pair of glasses, or with prescription lenses built-in. The glasses allow someone like me, a person with low vision, to see in virtually the same way as someone who is fully sighted can.
On February 12, 2019, I tried on a pair of the eSight glasses, and for the first time was able to fully see my mom's beautiful face and features. It was a very emotional experience and we both cried.
My mom and I are looking to raise funds to pay for the glasses. I was always a little uncertain of my future, and now with this new technology, I am going to pursue my dream of being a fashion designer and artist. I know I can do anything I put my mind to, with or without vision, but now I have new hope that I can actually pursue my dream!
