On May 1, 2026, PODER (People Organized in Defense of the Earth and her Resources) celebrated its 35th anniversary. By year’s end, we may shut our doors.

Funding cuts, which have grown in the wake of the Trump administration, now threaten PODER’s future. Today, we battle multibillion dollar companies and a council determined to sell out every inch of land in town, insensitive to our city’s most critical challenges of affordability and environmental health.

Our current staff of eight is small but mighty. Over the years, we’ve graduated 320+ youth in our Young Scholars for Justice (YSJ) program and distributed 400+ emergency starter kits to youth, parents, and elders in Montopolis. We’ve also registered 600+ voters in Travis County, preserved hundreds of affordable housing units, and helped establish numerous neighborhood associations. All of our work today builds off of the campaigns PODER waged decades ago to shut down six fuel storage tanks on Airport and Springdale, the Holly Street Power Plant, and the BFI recycling facility on Bolm Road.

PODER is raising $100,000 from today until October 31 to keep ourselves afloat as we apply for grant funding. Please help us continue the fight to: support the residents of the Dog’s Head and protect the Colorado River; provide clean, affordable water for the Austin’s Colony and Hornsby Bend neighborhoods in Far East Austin; bring a consistent luncheon and activity program to our seniors in Montopolis; develop the next generation of leaders via our YSJ program; and end legacy pollution and displacement.

Your generosity is greatly appreciated and will ultimately be felt by the communities we serve. Help sustain PODER and the movement for environmental justice in East Austin.

El 1 de mayo de 2026, PODER (People Organized in Defense of the Earth and her Resources / Pueblo Organizado en Defensa de La Tierra y Sus Recursos) celebró su 35.º aniversario.
