This is Erin. I met her one Sunday morning in January 1995 when she was the manager on my first shift as a brunch hostess at Cowgirl in the West Village. She was a boss then. And she has been one ever since. Over the last 23 years, I have come to know and love this funny, smart, passionate, and loyal friend as we have celebrated triumphs and slogged through life struggles. Erin has been there always. With understanding and without judgment as I have picked myself up from the wreckage of poor choices and unfortunate events that befall us. We have celebrated together and mourned together. We shared in the love of our families the day she was married and the day I mourned my father. And countless other times.
When I was stunned with a diagnosis of breast cancer in 2013, Erin was there through my tears, my rage, and my recovery. I am angry again today. Because my friend Erin is going through that same horror. She was recently diagnosed with ovarian cancer. At a mere 50 years old!
I have come together with a group of Erin’s friends to raise funds to help Erin support herself as she fights this battle.
We have great faith in my boss of a friend. She is stronger than she knows. And resilient. But we hate what she has to face over the coming months and we want to EVERYTHING in our power to soften the blow. Right now, Erin is recovering from a major surgery to remove the tumor and will be healing for the next six weeks. After that, she faces a brutal regimen of chemotherapy and radiation. She is in terrible discomfort right now and will be for at least the next six months. This means she is unable to work to support herself.
Erin’s expenses are modest. She lives with a family member, but she needs to cover the other basic costs of living—(food, personal care, etc.) and travel while she undergoes and recovers from her treatment. Our goal is to raise $5000 for Erin to help ease her financial stress during this difficult time.
Anything you can contribute will help. And every gesture will surely warm Erin’s heart. She is a boss, remember? And not one to show her tender side. But Erin will be very touched, and strengthened, by each and every contribution made. Thank you for considering helping our friend. She truly makes the world we live in a lighter, smarter and funnier one.
