My name is Erick Perez, and I am currently in school, graduating with a master's degree in clinical mental health counseling in December. Previously, I served in the United States Army as an airborne infantryman. I served one tour in Afghanistan, where a couple of friends lost their lives. I later worked as a police officer. Four years ago, after a very intense critical event, I began my journey with therapy. I suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder due to the compounded traumas I had experienced and witnessed. I was very fortunate to have found a therapist who helped me process these events and helped me better understand myself. The change had such a profound impact on me that I decided to change careers and become a therapist myself. This therapist of mine practiced a theoretical approach called Gestalt. I am especially thankful for my wife, who has supported me through these changes in my life and continues to support me to be the best version of myself.
Gestalt therapy is a type of counseling that helps people heal by focusing on the present moment and the whole person — mind, body, emotions, and relationships. Instead of only talking about the past, it encourages people to become aware of how they feel and what they need right now. In this approach, clients are gently guided to notice patterns, feelings, or “unfinished business” that may be holding them back. The goal is not just to cope but to grow into a more balanced, authentic, and empowered version of yourself — living more fully in the present and taking ownership of your healing journey.
I am raising money to continue my learning at the Gestalt Institute of the Rockies. Funds will go towards tuition at the institute. The institute offers a two-year program where one learns the fundamentals of the theory and is supervised by Gestalt clinicians. This training can help me bring resources to other veterans, first responders, under served, under represented, and Spanish-speaking community.
Thank you for your time and donations.
