Small Business Impacted By COVID-19
Erica’s Beauty Loft is an owner-operated, small business located north of Boston, that is still unable to operate due to the economic fallout from COVID-19. This shop caters to people of all ages, enhancing their natural beauty by currently specializing in professional eyelash extensions and airbrush spray tans within a very sanitary, relaxing environment. The shop owner, Erica, states, “It makes me feel so amazing to have a positive impact on people.. as it empowers women, and also boosts everyone’s confidence with the services I can offer!”
Because this closure was out of anyone’s control, Erica’s Beauty Loft has now took the unexpected step of asking the community for help. Asking for help isn’t easy, and it has been pushed off all this time, the best it could. But, now when trying to buy the new required and/or recommended disposable items (such as masks, face shields/goggles, gowns, gloves, and all the other extras).. without upping the shop’s service prices.. concerns are arising. I have always used masks, but at most $10 per box of 50.. They are now approximately $50 for the same box. There is a huge issue as most of the websites given to the small business are either on back-order (or such), don’t reply back, and/or the prices have been ridiculously raised.
GoFundMe perfectly states this big concern: “As states are reopening their economies, the focus has shifted to whether small to mid-sized businesses are even strong enough to reopen and have enough support to survive the new normal. Businesses must pay back months of deferred rent payments, while investing in costly equipment to keep their employees and guests safe and healthy.”
It is believed that Erica’s Beauty Loft is in Phase 2 of Massachusetts’ reopening plan, even while working only about 6 inches from a client’s face for one to three hours at a time. The prices of the disposable gowns have what really pushed the creation of this page. Living with very vulnerable people, I, Erica, need to be as safe as possible ..and also, as always, provide the most sanitary and safest environment to all of my clientele, each and every time.
The Face Behind This Small Business
Erica of Erica’s Beauty Loft is currently a solopreneur, licensed Medical Esthetician, looking to continue building her dream brand and creating jobs! “I have so many ideas I want to come to life, and expand my business! I can’t have it stop now! I’ve worked so hard to grow and become a FIVE STAR company! ..and I unfortunately don’t have options to work from home. However, I have taken this time during COVID-19 to learn more about my business as well as some possible new services that I would like to offer in the near future.” This business was started with very few options and no financial help. Erica also currently supports her son on her own.

What Has Been Done in The Meantime
To help flatten the curve, Erica’s Beauty Loft made the responsible decision to close about a week or two, prior to it being mandated. Every step possible to alleviate the financial stress of Erica’s Beauty Loft has been taken, with not much luck.. such as, but not limited to:
• Offering gift certificates
• Offering “Welcome Back” Sales (especially since there are no products that are able to be sold)
• Applying to Loans and grants, of all sorts. Many have requirements of minimum 3-5+ employees, and/or are regional.
Reason For Asking For Help
Even if the disaster loans are received, the funding will need to be paid back with interest. Deferred business rent and utility payments have quickly added up, and the investing of the PPE equipment to keep everyone safe quickly became costly. “As mentioned, I have tried my best to support my business, as well as myself and son, alone, at a minimum. But now I may need a small hand-up.. (not asking for a “hand-out”) ..If you know me, you know I always #PayItForward when possible ” All funds will go toward paying for the rent and utilities during the temporary closure, required PPE, supplies to keep offering services, and a very minimum payroll to support financial hardship during this crisis.
