Erica Needs A Cat

Donation protected
Hi, I'm your internet pal Erica, semi-infamously of the erica, inchoate/erica, ascendant blogthing and also of twitter  and tumblr  semi-infamy.

I've been in PTSD therapy for about a a year. I've made some serious progress that I'd never have believed possible, and of late my therapist has been more and more strongly suggesting I find myself a therapy cat.

Now, it's late summer here in Oregon, and our shelters are full of rambunctious five-to-six-month-old kitties. Big enough to be able to have some personality and not being too homicidal toward furniture.

I want to move on this opportunity and bring home a furry friend between now and the end of October. Before the rains really set in. My shrink has been pushing this since about March, and she's right: I do need a cat. I've been tortured about the whole idea of fundraising, and I need to have some reasonable financial security to be able to trust myself here.

The idea here is $1500 (minus fees and such) comes out to about what I need to have a kitty in a revenue-neutral manner for a year. A year is enough time to build some stability and take care of my little fuzzball, and hopefully I'll be a little better off by this time next year, since I am, you know, actually getting better. And a kitty will help SO MUCH.

Take $100 off the top for the cost of adopting and a pet license, which are presently $99 at the local kitty specialist.  That drops us to $1400.

So why $1400, which we'll round down to $1300 after fees?

1.  Deposit ($100) and animal cleaning fee ($200), which is $300. Yes, I'll get that $100 back, probably, someday. The $200, I won't. Still, it's part of making the first year revenue-neutral.  That leaves a thousand bux.

2. Two well-kitty visits to the vet. $200. Down to 800 dollars.

3. Cat carrier and cat-proofing the apartment. $100. That leaves 700 mewgabucks.

4. Litter and a cat pan. $150. 550 leftover.

5. Toys and climbing things like trees: $150. That leaves 400.

6. The rest is food and/or having some spare cash to put aside for a potential OMG CRAP CRAP vet trip. I think that's a fair way of looking at it; I know that even with this margin I will shoulder a little bit of the cost. If you choose to give past the goal, you can give more cushion, but $1300 should do it and make me more comfortable and able to enjoy the awesomeness of my own cat.

Thus, a $1500 ask. I hope that lines it up for you. No, that's not the kitty I'm getting. I'm going for low-fluff and adorable and loves me, which is frankly most cats.  I want to be able to reap the benefits without constantly worrying how I'm going to feed kitty face or WHAT IF Something Happens, etc.

What do you get in return? Well, probably fewer self-indulgent whiny 3am posts. Kitty pictures! But mostly a happier me, and thus my extreme thanks and gratitude.
