Equip Uzima's Vocational Classrooms

Education transforms lives. That's why we've built vocational classrooms for the older children at Uzima to learn a trade so they can beat poverty.

The Vocational Classrooms at Uzima Orphan & Day Care Centre are built now, but to be eligible for local government funding to get them up and runnning in 2019, we need to finish and equip them by the new year. We've not got long! Please help us fit the classrooms with sewing, building,  carpentry and IT equipment to enable us to start the vital work of training  the next generation with skills to work their way out of poverty.

Uzima in Our Hands, a UK based charity which supports 316 orphans and vulnerable children in the impoverished Western Province of Kenya, has already raised more than £50,000 (with generous donations and fundraising activities) to build vocational classrooms for older children to learn a trade after they have finished their education at Uzima. This community is in dire need of a skilled labour force and the vocational classrooms will equip the next generation to work their way out of poverty. Such skills for school leavers, and the community at large, are far more valuable and sustainable than charitable handouts.

You can see in the picture the vocational classroom building itself is up, the roof is going on, but now it needs equipping. We have estimated we need approximately £11,500 to equip the classrooms with sewing machines, carpentry tools, building materials etc.  and then we need a teaching team and ideally solar panels!

On our recent trip to Kenya, one home visit we made brought home to us just how vital vocational skills are.  A 16 year old child girl sat quietly with her siblings, we’ll call her Esther, she had finished her education at Uzima but couldn't go on to further education because her family, like many others, couldn't afford the school fees. She is a bright girl who did really well, and when asked she said she wanted to learn to be a tailor - we asked her what she does now and she said sadly that she just sits at home after chores are done. There is no work and no future without vocational training.

Can you help? Maybe you could buy an alternative Christmas gift and help the children at the same time. Please see below some of the items needed and click on DONATE, THANK YOU!
