Meet Ben. Born the youngest of three, and the only boy. While growing up, he was always doing something; from ages 5-12 he was a catcher for Levittown American Little League. In high school, he played trumpet in the jazz band and was also on the golf team.
Growing up, he had lots of friends... he was always guaranteed to be the jokester and the life of the
party. He decided to try something new, and moved to Texas when he was 24, after graduating from trucking school in NJ. He started working for Janco LTD, where he’sbeen for the past 27 years, doing long haul trucking, making more friends along the way. He also became the proud father of his son, Benjamin, who is now 24 and goes to college at UNT. Eventually, Ben started branching out with his trucking runs, and began hauling equipment for various well known bands on tour... always very generous with his family and friends when he could be, he enjoyed surprising people wit tickets, backstage access, schwag from the various tours,etc.
Unfortunately, Ben will not be able to do many ofthese things anymore. In March of 2017, he lost his right leg after 6 months in the hospital. He got a prostethic, and
Ben being Ben, grabbed this new change by the horns and put his all into getting used to it. Just as he was starting to get the hang of it, in December of 2017, he lost his left leg after being back in the hospital for 1 month. It turns out that Ben had a bacterial infection that ended up affecting both legs- to make matters worse, Ben is a diabetic. Anyone that knows anything about diabetes knows that bacterial infections and diabetes don’t mix well.
Unfortunately, this was the case for Ben.
Between being out of work for almost a year and acquiring roughly $10k in medical debt, needless to say, times have gotten tough, even for the toughest guy some of us know...Ben will never be able to go back to work as a truck driver again. He is trying his best to stay positive and get back on his feet but it’s getting very tough. He has been lucky enough to have a friend who has said he let him stay until the end of February, but after that Ben must find somewhere to go. He sold his condo before all of this happened because he was always on the road... he will continue to have medical bills. His doctors are hopeful that the infection does not return anywhere else but it IS a possibility. Despite this fact, Ben has maintained a positive attitude and a kick-ass approach to his recovery because that’s they type of person he is. He is NOT the type of person to ask for a handout or help- but sometimes even the toughest people need to be vulnerable.
