Team Justin: Training Eponine

My name is Justin and I am in great need of financial assistance. At the age of 15 years, I was diagnosed with high functioning Asperger’s Syndrome (AS) and Chronic Anxiety, which includes symptoms of OCD. Despite being a gifted musician, studying part time through grants and with the support of the Accessibility Office at WLU’s music program, the symptoms of my diagnosis are debilitating and make it quite challenging to function day to day and achieve my life goals. I have been assessed and advised by the specialists on my support team that having the day to day support of a service dog would greatly improve my ability to manage. Research has shown that having the assistance of a service dog for those with Autism Spectrum Disorders can provide relief from the daily overwhelming symptoms I encounter. Through sensations of touch and feelings of companionship, I can better manage my symptoms and achieve greater independence.

After a year of an exhaustive search and applying to all possible service dog agencies, I have been repeatedly informed that I was assessed and diagnosed after the age to qualify for a funded service dog. Out of desperation, my family and I started to search for my own dog to train and have been fortunate to find Eponine from Windsong Collies, who has been assessed as ready for service dog training. I have already connected with Canine Support Services (CSS) in partnership with Working Paws, who have years of experience training service dogs for Autism and they have agreed to work with me to train Eponine.  You can learn more about their program at http://www.caninesupportservices.ca.

As a recipient of Ontario Disability Support Program, I do not have any accessible income over my monthly living costs to train Eponine and it is necessary for me to fundraise for the cost of training and my support team is helping with this.   Any amount you can offer would be so appreciated. Please donate and help be part of my team to raise the funds needed to train Eponine and help to improve my overall quality of life!

For those who do not feel comfortable with online donations, my support team has agreed to collect cheque donations that are made out to Justin Leckie and mailed or dropped off to Interfaith Counselling Centre, 23B Church Street, New Hamburg, ON, N3A 1J1.
