Cal Rotaract: End Polio Now

This semester Cal Rotaract is holding an End Polio Now campaign which will consist of our GoFundMe online campaign as well as our End Polio Now 5K walk/run that is happening on November 5th, 2017. All proceeds from the campaign will go directly towards buying polio vaccinations to be administered to children all around the world. The money that we raise here on GoFundMe will be pooled with Cal Rotaract’s annual End Polio Now 5K fundraising proceeds, which will then in total be matched 2:1 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation ($10 becomes $30) before being applied to Rotary’s vaccination administration organization: Polio Plus.
What is polio? Polio is a highly infectious disease that most commonly affects children under the age of 5. The polio virus is spread from person to person, typically through contaminated water. It can attack the nervous system, and in some instances, lead to paralysis. Paralysis is the most severe symptom associated with polio, because it can lead to permanent disability and death. Although there is no cure, there is a safe and effective vaccine - one in which Rotary International and its partners uses to immunize over 2.5 billion children worldwide.
Back in 1988, Rotary International and the World Health Organization launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. Since then, polio cases have been reduced by 99.9% worldwide; more than 16 million people are able to walk today who would have otherwise been paralyzed, and an estimated 1.5 million childhood deaths have been prevented.
29 years ago, 125 countries were endemic with polio. Today, only 3 countries (Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Nigeria) remain endemic. Unless we eradicate polio from every country in the world and keep all other countries polio-free, within 10 years we could see as many as 200,000 new cases each year, all over the world.
Unless we reach every child with the vaccine, no child anywhere is safe.
Polio is entirely preventable, and we have the ability to protect every person from this dangerous and debilitating disease. But we need your help. It is necessary that we as volunteers and donors give our dedication and commitment to give back to those who do not have the luxury of receiving infant vaccinations. We urge you to consider donating to our cause, as we together can truly make a difference in the world. We can make one of history’s greatest public health achievements by eradicating polio, making polio the second human disease to be eliminated from this world after smallpox.
We will be collecting donations between now and November 5th. In addition, our EPN 5K on November 5th welcomes everyone to walk/run in solidarity with Rotary International, the BIll and Melinda Gates FOundation, and Cal Rotaract in creating a polio-free world.
