Epilepsy medical response dog for Lexey
Donation protected
In September 2022 Lexey was diagnosed with Epilepsy. Our daughter had a Tonic Clonic (Grand Mal) seizure in class at her high school. A whirlwind of questions, fear and doctors appointments followed. Lexey is now under the care of a pediatric neurologist. Multiple EEGs show her brain has abnormal activity on both hemispheres at the same time and she was placed on medication right away. This is a life-altering diagnosis. Just at a time when she turned 15 years old, growing up and needing more independence. The medication alone is debilitating at times with horrific side effects and the fear of seizures controls her daily life. Lexey needs to be monitored throughout the day and evening, robbing her of independence. Lexey is coping the best she can these last 8 months, unfortunately, this is a lifelong diagnosis. Lexey is more likely to have larger seizures in her sleep or soon after waking. We never know when they can intrude on her day. She now has a strict routine of medication and sleep. Lexey would love her independence back and we would like to ease our minds and keep her safe when she is alone. Lexey is raising money to help offset costs for a medical response service dog. This dog would alert for help upon her starting a seizure in her sleep, alone in a room or out in public, it will help ease her out of the seizure by stimulating her and providing comfort and stability in the postictal state (the phase after the seizure), along with other tasks we may need for her safety. This will provide Lexey with some independence and help with her fears of being alone. The dog will follow her to college and watch over her when we cannot. The cost of a service dog and training is a very expensive endeavor and we are doing everything we can so Lexey can continue this journey safely and happily. We would greatly appreciate any donations towards this life-changing opportunity.
