Without this treatment, his condition will continue to worsen, putting his life at risk. Heartworm disease is not only dangerous but incredibly painful, and Enzo deserves the chance to run, play, and live a happy, healthy life again.

<div>Paws 4 A Cure is providing a $400 grant, but his mom and dad are trying to raise an additional $300 for the remainder of the funds that Enzo needs to move forward with the treatment.

<div>“I first saw Enzo on Facebook as one of the dogs scheduled to be euthanized if he wasn’t adopted by Friday. My heart broke immediately. The white on his snout made me think he was older, and I know how often older dogs get overlooked; the description of his post estimated him to be around 4-6 years old. I couldn’t stop thinking about him, especially imagining my own 10-year-old German Shepherd, Bear, in that position, scared and waiting for us to come back for him. Enzo had already been at the shelter for quite some time, and I kept hoping his owners or someone would rescue him.

<div>Every day, I checked for updates, hoping someone would save him. Many dogs on the list were adopted or fostered (which I’m so grateful for!), but upon checking his post on Friday, Enzo still did not have anyone willing to pull him out. After frantically calling my husband during work, he agreed that we could foster Enzo. I was unable to pick him up before the shelter closed that day, as it was an extremely busy work day and living approximately and hour and a half from the shelter, I knew I could not get there in time. After reaching out to several people on Facebook, I was informed that Fraternity of the 4 Paws would be pulling Enzo out of the shelter for us, which I am forever grateful for. However, since he had kennel cough, they decided to keep him at a boarding facility for one week, before we would pick him up.

<div>When Enzo came home, the transition was rough. He and our dogs had a hard time adjusting, and he started having severe diarrhea. After taking him to the vet, we found out he had whipworms. After getting him treated, the diarrhea eventually continued. I took him to the vet again and this time, added on a heartworm test. Unfortunately, his heartworm result came back a strong positive. It started to make sense why he got tired so easily after short walks in our neighborhood and would lay down and sleep so often. I was devastated, especially after learning the cost of treatment. I was worried that I could not provide the necessary treatment. Even after comparing estimates from another vet, the current option is more affordable but still too high for us at the moment.

<div>Enzo has completed 30 days of Doxycycline (antibiotic) and has received a dose of Heartgard. He is scheduled for his first melarsomine injection on Tuesday, March 31, 2026. I feel extremely blessed that Fraternity of the 4 Paws and Paws 4 A Cure are willing to contribute, as this has helped us feel more at ease and made treatment feel more attainable.

<div>After contributing what we can, I am hoping to raise at least $300. The estimate varies depending on weight (between 50–100 lbs), and Enzo is about 65 lbs. Although he is still our foster baby, Enzo has truly become part of our family. He is now best friends with one of my dogs, Jamie, and has brought so much joy to our everyday lives. My goal is for Enzo to live a long, healthy life, filled with love.
