Legal Defense for Tyler County

East Texas Packing Company is a proposed slaughterhouse & meatpacking facility to be located in 8/10th of a mile for the Woodville City Limits in Tyler County. We are asking for help to fund our legal defense.
People have asked, “What can we do to stop this?” Time and time it has been said, “There is no legal recourse in stopping the slaughterhouse project in Tyler County.”
Over the last several months, we have been feverishly working out the details of a legal defense for our county.
Concerned citizens...We are pleased to announce there are, indeed, legal options!
We have retained legal representation. Dallas J. Barrington, with the law firm of Roebuck, Thomas, Roebuck, and Adams, will be representing all of us who are opposed to the East Texas Packing Company slaughterhouse project.
Through a few private, generous benefactors, Concerned Citizens of Tyler County has been able to fund the first stage of what will undoubtedly be a long, expensive battle.
We are NOT going into this seeking compromise, rather we are in it to win it.
We are the spark that starts the fire. We are the storm.
Who Are We?
This group is composed of people throughout Woodville and Tyler County, Texas; including 2,000+ who have signed a petition that was circulated for only a couple of weeks. We also have an opposition Facebook page with over 3,500 members. We believe this slaughterhouse poses risks to our health, water, air, and quality of life that are too impactful! The disturbing health and environmental record of these types of facilities are well established all around the nation.
Furthermore, we oppose the uncompensated damage an influx of hundreds of low wage jobs would inflict upon our schools, property values, the medical community, law enforcement, welfare services, and roads.
In addition to the organized group of citizens united against this slaughterhouse, our County Commissioners and Judge have approved a resolution in opposition to the slaughterhouse.
State Representative James White held a town hall meeting regarding the slaughterhouse all to no avail. This plant has been rejected by multiple counties, cities, and communities in Southeast Texas. It has been made very clear that they intend to build and operate in Tyler County regardless of the concerns the community has, and because they feel we are powerless to stop them.
Since the news of this slaughterhouse came to light in May, we have learned that, by law, our county does not have the statutory authority to restrict businesses through permits and licenses.
We have also learned from our city, that by law, it must grant and provide utilities (water and sewer) to East Texas Packing Company because, even though it will not be in the city limits, it is in the city’s Water and Sewer CCN (Certificates of Convenience and Necessity). This has truly been a sobering experience for our citizens and confidence in the right of self-determination by the people has been shaken!
Our Mission
We intend to stop the proposed slaughterhouse/meat-packing facility by informing our community and engaging action!
We are using legal, technical, and political pressure at every turn to achieve that end.
Our Goal
We have asked East Texas Packing Company to be a good corporate citizen and ease the concerns of our community by agreeing to conduct an environmental impact study. We have many rare, threatened, and endangered species in Tyler County. They have declined.
Therefore, we have retained legal representation to defend our beautiful county.
