Earthquake Relief Efforts

My name is Rebecka Hanson, I work for Utah State University as a Family Services Coordinator under a 21st Century Community Learning Center grant to provide community outreach to families from Entheos Academy, Magna.  My role is to help families in the community to find and receive services available to them. Entheos Academy Magna is directly across the street from the trailer park described in this campaign, and many of the families have students that attend our school and afterschool program.  While the school cannot provide earthquake assistance in an official capacity, we are very anxious for our families affected by this tragedy.  We have spent the last few days calling the families that have been displaced.  We have found several whose mobile homes have fallen off of the foundations/jacks, and they have no means to rectify the situation. While some have received food or temporary shelter from the Red Cross, they do not have the means to get back into their homes.  Many of the parents living in this area are very low income, and speak only minimal English.

So far this campaign has primarily circulated among Entheos Academy families and staff , as well as other members of the USU Extension 4-H community.  We have also received some support from the EL Education community, a K-12 program that is a foundation for our curriculum.  This fundraiser is intended to help the families who found themselves in the epicenter of  a recent earthquake, particularly those who attend Entheos Academy Magna, who were also negatively impacted with Co-Vid 19, and were on quarantine at the time of the earthquake.  We are still in the process of assessing which families have the greatest need.   Before any distribution of funds, we will compile the information we are gathering on family needs and create a committee to ensure funds are distributed equitably among those who have been displaced to help them to either  make repairs to their homes or to cover the costs of relocating. Some funds may also be used to replace household necessities lost in the earthquake.

As many of you know a 5.7 magnitude earthquake rattled Utah  early Wednesday morning on March 18, 2020.  Many families in the Magna and West Valley area who attend Entheos Academy, a free public charter school in Magna Utah, have found themselves without a home.  A good number of these families reside in a trailer parks and were hit the hardest when the earthquake occurred.  A lot of homes were destroyed.  Likewise, many of these families don't have homeowners insurance, or the damages aren't covered by the insurance.  

Reports are coming in of homes completely removed from the foundations, children living in cars as they currently don't have heat in their home.  Many families are living with elderly family members, putting themselves and others at risk for contracting Co-Vid 19.  A number of these families are immigrants, who speak limited english and have very little resources to their name.

This account is to help provide relief to families most impacted by this earthquake. All proceeds will go directly to those families in need.

Hemos encontrado varios cuyas casas móviles se han caído de los cimientos, y no tienen medios para rectificar la situación. Si bien algunos han recibido alimentos o refugio temporal de la Cruz Roja, no tienen los medios para regresar a sus hogares. Muchos de los padres que viven en esta área tienen muy bajos ingresos y solo hablan un inglés mínimo.

Hasta ahora, esta campaña ha circulado principalmente entre las familias y el personal de Entheos Academny, así como entre otros miembros de la comunidad de USU Extension 4-H. También hemos recibido algo de apoyo de la comunidad EL Education, un programa K-12 que es la base de nuestro plan de estudios. El objetivo de esta recaudación de fondos es ayudar a las familias que se encontraron en el epicentro de un terremoto reciente, particularmente a aquellos que asisten a la Academia  de Entheos, que también se vieron afectados negativamente con Co-Vid 19, y estaban en cuarentena en el momento del terremoto. Todavía estamos en el proceso de evaluar cuales familias tienen la mayor necesidad. Antes de cualquier distribución de fondos, repasaremos la información que estamos recopilando sobre las necesidades de las familias y crearemos un comité para asegurar que los fondos se distribuyan equitativamente entre aquellos que han sido desplazados para ayudarlos a reparar sus hogares o cubrir los costos de la reubicación . Algunos fondos también se pueden usar para reemplazar las necesidades domésticas perdidas en el terremoto.

Un terremoto de magnitud 5.7 sacudió a Utah la madrugada del miércoles 18 de marzo de 2020. Muchas familias en el área de Magna y West Valley que asisten a Entheos Academy, una escuela pública gratuita en Magna Utah, se han encontrado sin hogar. Un buen número de estas familias residen en un parque de casas rodantes y fueron las más afectadas cuando ocurrió el terremoto. Muchas casas fueron destruidas. Del mismo modo, muchas de estas familias no tienen seguro de vivienda o los daños no están cubiertos por el seguro.

Están llegando informes de hogares completamente retirados de los cimientos, niños que viven en automóviles ya que actualmente no tienen calefacción en su hogar. Muchas familias viven con miembros de la familia de edad avanzada, poniéndose a sí mismas y a otras personas en riesgo de contraer Co-Vid 19. Algunas de estas familias son inmigrantes, que hablan inglés limitado y tienen muy pocos recursos.
