We are the members of the Rotary Club of Wyndham Harbour together with family and friends. This year we will be taking part in the 22km, 10km, 5km, or 3km events at the Melbourne Marathon to raise funds towards our health programs.
END TRACHOMA & END POLIO
Australia is the world's only developed country with trachoma, an infectious eye disease that can be prevented with good hygiene practices. Trachoma is an infectious eye disease that can be prevented with good hygiene practices. But it is still present in remote Aboriginal communities and can lead to permanent blindness. Prevention is the focus of EndTrachoma by 2020.
Our goal is based around the simple fact that providing the opportunity for people to be clean can prevent the spread of infectious diseases like trachoma.
Additionally,
Polio, a crippling and potentially deadly infectious disease. Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 30 years, and we’ve made incredible progress in the fight to rid the world of it forever. A lot of effort has gone to eradicating the disease by the Rotary organisation and partners, to a reduced number of polio cases by more than 99.9 percent. It’s crucial to eliminate polio from the last three countries where it remains endemic and to keep other countries polio-free.
If all eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyze as many as 200,000 children each year. We’re close to eradicating polio, but we’re not done yet. We still need funds to continue immunization and surveillance efforts.
The Rotary Club of Wyndham Harbour will raise funds to assist with the immunization and surveillance efforts getting the program closer to the finish line.
