In 2016, documentary filmmaker Kelly West made a short video about the online harassment of women. The women featured at the beginning of this video were in that film. Their experiences are remarkably similar to those of women who run for and sit in political offices.
Our short public service announcement will feature women, across the political spectrum, telling their own stories about the gender-based threats and denigration that they endure every day. This funding project will primarily pay for travel so that we can interview women across the country.
Our goal is to raise public awareness of the daily hostility that women in politics face as the result of being women engaging in public life.
As is the case all over the world, American women face harassment, sexism, pornographic objectification, and threats of violence when they share their ideas, opinions and beliefs openly and publicly, especially if they run for office. When women engage in politics, they should not face disproportionate risks to their safety, dignity, free speech, privacy or the dignity, privacy and safety of their families who are often also threatened with rape, death, violence and pornography.
We hope, with this video, to challenge communities, political parties and electoral institutions to change their “business-as-usual” approaches to running campaigns and supporting candidates. For women to run for office institutions need to recognize the additional and highly gendered risks women take when they serve in public roles.
