It only takes one encounter with Donna Decker for her to leave a footprint on your heart.

My mom has a disease called retinitis pigmentosa (RP). It's a disease that causes the retina to deteriorate over time, causing tunnel vision and night blindness, and for most inevitably... complete blindness. This new development called the Argus II has made me believe there's hope for my mom to see more of the world than she's sees now, which is nothing. Since I share this disease with her, and have a small inkling of her daily struggles, I want to make this a new reality for her.

My mother has been black blind for over twenty years now. For those who know her, you know she is one amazing, charismatic, and smart woman! She's silly in the best way and knows how to bring a whole room of people to tears of laughter.

This fairly new Argus II procedure is now government approved and changing the lives of many worldwide. If we can raise enough money to allow her to undergo this sergery, a device (or basically retina compensation) will be inserted around her eye, and she will be able to see in black and white - opening up her world so much more.

When discussing with her about this possible opportunity she says: "I'm a little scared to see again. Sometimes I would rather just remain blind because I don't want my hopes getting too high if something doesn't work out. But I would love to see my grandchildren...and I wanna go to the zoo and see a monkey"

Step 1 would be to helping her gain confidence and support from her family and friends. Can you imagine living in a black world for so long and then all of a sudden finding out that could change?
Step 2 would be to raise support in order for her to travel to the appropriate hospital (most likely Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia), get evaluated, get the procedure, and undergo rehabilitation consisting of therapy to assist her with her new sighted world.
Step 3 would ultimately be to go through and pass an evaluation by doctors, basically telling her that yes, she is an eligible candidate.
Step 4 is after we receive word of her eligibility, a date will be selected pending on a potential wait list and what my mom is feeling.
Step 5 is the three R's... RECEIVE ARGUS II, rehab, rejoice!

There is one thing I have left out, and it is the most important. The umbrella to this whole thing is PRAYER. That is our number one support tool in all of this. Along with financial support, we are asking for prayer, guidance, and peace as we walk through this journey with my momma.

This has been one of my biggest dreams, to be able to witness my mom with even a little vision.
I AM SO EXCITED!!!!

Note: There is word that there WILL be more development in the future where color will be added to the Argus II. When that time comes, the device can be automatically updated.
