Cancer hit our family again this year. We lost our mother to the disease a few short years ago, and now our sister/ daughter/mother/aunt Debbie has been diagnosed with breast cancer.
She had a mastectomy following the diagnosis earlier this year, but it would be the first of seven surgeries in six months! The most recent surgery on August 25 removed a large, fast growing tumor – hopefully deterring the re-emergence of another one.
But surgery is only the first strike in her battle. After the incision stretching from the middle of her back to her chest heals, her team of doctors will begin targeted radiation. Chemo therapy is within the realm of possibilities but at this point is still unknown.
She’s looking at a month of recovery from this most recent surgery before the next offensive against the persistent tumors indicative of her cancer.
I’m sure it’s no surprise to anyone reading this that cancer treatment is expensive. Compounding the already astronomical medical bills, she misses work (and paychecks) every hospital stay.
Debbie has worked hard all her life – often working multiple jobs. She raised two children and earned a college degree taking night classes through it all. Now she needs some help.
Although she has a full time job with health insurance, Florida is an "at will" employment state, meaning her job can be terminated at any time without advance warning. She’s missed a lot of work, and it’s likely she’ll miss more. There is a looming fear the safety net she currently has in place could disappear at any time.
A battle with cancer is never a fair fight. Help us even the odds and give Debbie a fighting chance to KICK CANCER'S ASS!!!
