End Hunger during COVID-19

Donation protected
There is no better time than now, to come together, to act together.

Sight and Life has responded to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic by coordinating demand for food with a supply of fortified food and supplements, across geographies. Help Sight and Life (a not-for-profit) in our mission to alleviate the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic. Help spread hope so they can cope.

We are in the eye of the proverbial perfect storm, with COVID-19 sending consistent shock waves across all spheres of life. While the virus has been referred to as an equalizer of many sorts, it becomes clearer day by day that there are some, for whom it hurts more than others. Pre-existing financial and social vulnerabilities are deepened in these times. The lockdown to contain the virus has caused major disturbances in the day-to-day food supply which are being felt even at an individual level. Procurement, distribution, pricing – fluctuations in these related systems are deeply impacting low-income households.

Please read on to know more about our efforts across India, Rwanda and South Africa, and how you can help.

India

In India, Sight and Life is supporting its network of institutional partners, NGOs such as The Akshaya Patra Foundation, The Hungry Foal, The Breakfast Revolution to help provide nutritious food supplies to vulnerable sections of society across the country. These include marginalized and low-income groups - children under 5 years, pregnant and lactating mothers, daily wage earners, migrant laborers, the needy, and the elderly. *If you would like to donate in Indian rupees head to our Milaap page here

Rwanda

Rwanda reported its first case of COVID-19 on  March 14, 2020. The Government of Rwanda acted promptly to curb the spread of COVID-19 by introducing strong mitigation measures mainly through social distancing however, these measures impact the informal sector. Specifically, a significant majority of people depend on their daily income to provide for their families. Many of these people are facing a problem of lack of food to feed their families. Even more importantly, pregnant women and children under five years due to their specific nutritional requirements are at increased nutritional risk. The Government of Rwanda has been implementing food distribution to vulnerable groups of people but not all have access to the food.

It’s with the above rationale that the Sight and Life is working with local NGO’s like the Center for Public Health and Development in Rwanda and others to supplement the government’s efforts by designing and implementing a robust food distribution initiative that targets the special nutritional needs of certain groups of people such as pregnant women, children below five years of age, the elderly as well as the historically marginalized community. As President Kagame says, “As always, we will overcome these difficult times through solidarity and working together. This will require the discipline Rwandans have always shown in confronting challenges and getting good results.”

South Africa

In South Africa, hunger poses the greatest threat to the well-being and security of millions during the lockdown – and the difficulties involved with getting food to those in need are tremendous. Sight and Life is stepping up to coordinate emergency hunger relief through its social business, Sizanani Mzanzi, dedicated to bringing affordable, nutritious foods to vulnerable South African households.

At Sight and Life, we understand the critically important role that nutrition plays in the first 1,000 days of a child’s life, significantly influencing a child’s survival and impacting their future potential. Which is why as soon as the lockdown was imposed, we coordinated the donation of Sizanani Mzanzi’s instant fortified cereal to around 600 children attending early learning centers run by Bambanani, a local NGO, for children from marginalized communities.

However, our donation is simply a drop in the ocean and we need your support to reach many more children and support local partners like Bambanani. Together, we can ensure that in the wake of this global pandemic, we are not only filling hungry tummies but also providing vital vitamins and minerals necessary for optimal health and development.
