End Homelessness in Kingston, Ontario

Our Livable Solutions (OLS) aims to end homelessness through creative initiatives developed in collaboration with people currently experiencing homelessness. We're listening to the experts and working with them to find solutions to improve their quality of life.

Our micro home initiative was initially conceived at the Belle Park Encampment Summer 2020 . We have interviewed many of the people who might want to live in this style of housing, and have involved people experiencing homelessness in every aspect of this initiative. We do nothing about them without them. Listen to Will as he explains why he wants to live in a micro home.

The concept is to place micro homes in clusters with a support building containing care facilities (bathrooms, showers, kitchen, meeting areas) and work in collaboration with existing service providers to coordinate people's care and help them improve their quality of life. When they decide they're ready, we will support people as they transition into more traditional housing styles. This initiative is new for Kingston, but has been clearly established as a successful option for people in other communities. We look to initiatives like A Better Tent City , Community First Village and Reseda Tiny Home Village for best practices and hazards to avoid.

Diversity will be embraced in our communities which is why we've chosen to build homes from a variety of vendors, priced from $6300 to $15,000. (Photo album ) With all home styles we will involve the community and people who might live in the homes in the build, furnishing and decorating processes. Please contact us if you would like to volunteer. All of our homes will be accessible, we have engaged with accessibility experts to make sure we'll be able to accommodate people with diverse mobility abilities. Our hope is to build communities where people can thrive, be as independent as possible and explore possibilities so they might find new reasons to engage with the broader Kingston community.

We believe strongly in transparency and accountability. As we build our communities and welcome residents, we will engage with health care experts and researchers to develop quality of life metrics and individualized criteria for success. We don't think this initiative is the only solution to homelessness, we will need a variety of solutions, but we will work to determine scientifically whether this solution has merit in contributing towards an eventual end to homelessness.

Micro homes can be placed on private land without hoop jumping. If you have a situation like Kim and David, and would like a micro home for your property, to help house someone you know experiencing homelessness, please contact us. We are open to discussing land possibilities, if you have land with an existing support building which you think may help short or long term, please contact us. We have had enough discussions to feel confident that an initial location announcement is imminent. We need to start building homes to ensure as many as possible can be safe before winter which is why we are launching this campaign prior to securing a first location.

OLS cannot issue charitable tax receipts, but we have partners who may be able to assist. Please contact us before contributing through GoFundMe if you require a charitable tax receipt.
