Marrickville High Support Unit

My name is Rita Kazzi and I've had a personal goal for the past 5 years to organise a fundraising campaign for the Support Unit at Marrickville High School (MHS).

The support unit consists of students with Autism, intellectual and/or physical disabilities. My goal is to provide furniture to enhance the physical environment for the students in the support unit.  The students are a diverse group of students who require different support.  This furniture will assist to improve their educational development to meet their educational outcomes.

I commenced working as a School Learning Support Officer (Teachers Aide) in February 2007 at MHS  just over 9 years ago of which have been  the best 9 years of my working career.

The following year in December 2008 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. The school was very supportive throughout my journey and the students brightened each and every minute throughout chemotherapy and the reoccurrence of breast cancer in 2009.

I will be running in the Asics Stockholm Marathon on 4th June and Sydney Marathon in September this year to raise $20,000 for ergonomic classroom furniture for six special education classrooms. I have been on an intense training program of 90kms a week preparing for these marathons.

Currently, the furniture in the classrooms is over 40 years old and is not suitable for the students to be seated for long periods of times as many of them have physical disabilities.

Adjustable tables and chairs which are suitable to indivudual students' physcial needs allows functional access and participation with the curriculum.  Each classroom supports the education of a maximum of 18 students. 110 tables and 120 chairs are needed to ensure all students and teachers/para professionals working with the students are at the same level for increased engagement.  Having additional tables enables breakaway areas when students need additional space to participate in their education.

The funds are required by December 2016 so the special needs students can commence 2017 with the new tables and chairs in their classrooms.  This will fulfill my personal goal of returning the immense satisfaction the students provide to my every day at work as a Teachers Aide in the Support Unit at MHS.

Thank you for taking the time to read my campaign. No amount is too small and any amount will be greatly appreciated. Every student deserves an equal learning experience.
