Calvin Barrett Family

Calvin Andrew Barrett was born at 12.20 p.m. on March 2, 2016.  Calvin weighed in at 8 lbs. 10 oz. and he appeared to be a normal healthy newborn.  A true "Minnesota Baby", as they call big boys like him.

Within hours after his birth, Calvin stopped breathing and suffered a seizure.  He was rushed to the NICU unit of University of Minnesota Children's Hospital and it was found that Calvin's blood glucose dropped to a dangerous level of 2 (normal glucose level is 70-100).  This extremely low glucose level is what caused his breathing to stop and the seizure to occur.

It was found that Calvin did not suffer any neurological damage from the seizure or lack of oxygen, which was welcome news to his worried parents and family.  It was determined that Calvin suffered from hyperinsulinism, which means his pancreas makes too much insulin so his little body cannot keep enough glucose (blood sugar) to maintain normal functions.

Unfortunately, stabilizing Calvin was not easy, even with the talented medical staff at the UM Children's Hospital. On Tuesday, March 22, Calvin was placed on a late night air ambulance flight to Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth, TX to see specialists in the field of hyperinsulinism.

After spending a week at Cook Children's Medical Center, Calvin's condition began to improve and it was determined that pancreatic surgery was not needed. Calvin was affectionately given the nickname "Big Papa" by the nurses at Cook Hospital.  :)

Although this good news is a blessing, the month spent non-stop at hospitals to be near Calvin has been difficult for his first-time parents, Ashley and Andrew Barrett. Both Ashley and Andrew have not been able to work and there are many medical bills.  Although the family has medical insurance, it is not enough to cover the expenses the family has encountered during the past month.

Please consider donating to this awesome little family to help aid in the medical and personal expenses this difficult time has placed upon them.  Any money generated will be used to pay uncovered medical expenses.

Helping my daughter Ashley and son-in-law Andrew means the world to me and our families.  They are the most loving and caring couple and our little Calvin is a true gift from God.

Ashley, Andrew and our families have been blessed with awesome friends and family who have been there during our time of need.

Thank you so much for your donation.  God Bless!
