Women Democracy & Good Governance

My name is Koro Sinclair. I am the Executive Director of the Canadian Organization for Democratic Elections (CODE Canada), a not-for-profit Canadian NGO based in Ottawa. CODE Canada supports inclusive and effective democratic governance through advocacy and advise to electoral management bodies, civil societies, and local actors around the world. We work to enhance institutional capacity in new and emerging democracies to deliver free and fair elections, and inclusive and accountable governance.
Gender equality is one of CODE Canada’s core areas of focus. Around the world women are noticeably absent from national and local electoral process. Women continue to struggle to have an equal voice in civil societies and democratic institutions, and, in some cases, they are excluded from the political processes entirely!
Women make up half the world’s population, but it is estimated that women occupy less than a quarter of the world’s seats in legislatives bodies. In many emerging democracies that number is much lower. However, it is not just a question of numbers. It is also about creating opportunities where women can express their needs and interests and influence decisions that affect them. One of the main reasons women’s participation is so low, and there are many, is a lack of support and resources.
We strive to improve and strengthen women’s rights throughout the political and electoral cycle.
We are looking for support though your generous contributions for projects to increase women’s participation in electoral and governance processes. We will provide expertise and capacity building for civil society organizations to advocate for legal rights that will permit women to participate equally in governance, democracy, and elections in their societies.
We are working with organizations and partners on initiatives to bring about change that seeks to enfranchise all citizens, remove barriers, and achieve gender equality in several countries, including: Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Nigeria, and Tunisia.
We need your assistance to help us support new and emerging democracies and promote the full participation of all citizens in the decision-making processes and institutions affecting their lives.
