In many regions of Africa, people still have no access to electricity. Over 90 % of the rural population in Benin suffer from energy poverty. The health centers partially lack simple equipment, i.e. lighting or sufficient cooling to offer satisfactory treatment. Under these circumstances, even small investments can have a huge impact on the quality of health care.
We are an international group of students from Benin, D.R. Congo, Senegal and Germany. As part of the Greening Africa Together project, we want to use our acquired knowledge to offer more people access to clean electrical energy. For this purpose we are working together with the local health centre of Tori-Acadjamé in the south of Benin. The health centre serves as a maternity and offers primary treatment to the people of Tori-Acadjamé and the surrounding villages. The main goal is the installation of a photovoltaic system to make use of the abundant sun hours in the region. Through research and intensive surveys we identified three milestones this project.

Milestone 1:
After reaching the first milestone, we will provide the health center with a solar refrigerator to ensure the proper storage of vaccines and serums. We also want to illuminate the most crucial rooms, such as the delivery and operation rooms. In order to ensure sustainability of the project, we set up a small mobile phone charging station whose income will enable the center to cope with expenses related to the maintenance and operation of the system.

Milestone 2:
In addition to the needs taken into account before, we plan to illuminate the remaining rooms. Furthermore we increase the capacity of the charging station, so that revenues can cover the maintenance of all facilities.

Milestone 3:
Having achieved the final milestone, we want to improve the comfort of the staff and patients in the center. This is done by installing ventilation and electrifying multiple devices, like coffee machines, television and other small appliances.

Part of all milestones is the training of local staff in the basics of maintenance and operation to assure  the longevity of the project.  In the following years the project will be expanded by the GATo-Project. Thus the situation in Tori-Acadjamé will continue to improve.
