Help Us Empower Ethiopia

With the promise of a better life and work opportunities, many Ethiopian girls, some as young as 12, are sold away by their families to go to the capital Addis Ababa.  There they are often raped, trafficked, and sexually exploited, forced to work in prostitution for as little as $2 a day.  With no education of protection and contraception, many risk teen pregnancy, HIV, and other harmful STI’s.  Though we may think of this as a horrific situation, the reality is that in the face of systemic poverty and lack of opportunity, for these women this is the least worst choice of a bad set of options.

Ethiopia has rapidly become a hub of sex tourism and child sex tourism in eastern Africa, with over 150,000 women working in prostitution.  Human trafficking and slavery is on the rise, leaving young girls on the streets abused, lonely, and desperate.

Ellilta Women At Risk (EWAR) is a faith-based and local non-profit organization that works with victims to break the destructive cycle of prostitution.  By providing holistic rehabilitation, counselling, skills training, and jobs placement programs, EWAR has helped over 1000 women leave prostitution and find alternative employment with a 90% success rate.



Over 70 volunteers and staff at EWAR work tirelessly around the clock to help support the victims, many of whom were once victims themselves.  Through their hard work, they can often experience burnout and compassion fatigue.  We at GoodTree Christian Fellowship believe that lasting change can only be made possible through the support of local organizations, empowering Ethiopia to positively impact society from within.

By donating, you will be helping us send a group of 9 volunteers from Calgary, Canada to Addis Ababa in March 2019 to host a retreat for the EWAR team, leading seminars on topics such as self-care and compassion fatigue management.  You will be contributing to a longer-term strategy of bringing intentional and positive outcomes to the societal fabric of Ethiopia, helping end the destructive cycle of sex slavery and human trafficking.
