Empowering Black Youth to Invest for College

Donation protected

The Boise State University Black Alumni Chapter  has designated Brown Like Me  as its 2020 Holiday Fundraiser recipient!

Funds raised will be used to open 40 college investment accounts for Brown Like Me youth and to teach them the basics of investing in the stock market.

The program aims to narrow the racial wealth gap experienced by Black people; the typical net worth of a white family is ten times greater than a Black family. Minorities are taught to put their money in the bank and save, not invest. Investing in financial markets is an important step in narrowing this gap.(1)

The program will empower Brown Like Me youth to envision a future with economic certainty and control. The accounts they open will be targeted for college or other post-secondary education—so they can enjoy a more financially secure future.

The Boise State University Black Alumni Chapter will:
--provide each child with $100 (dependent on percentage of target goal raised);
--introduce the youth to the equity and fixed-income markets;
--help them and their parents open an investment account on platforms such as Stockpile.com, etc.; and
--guide them in choosing stocks.

The alumni leaders will follow up with the students quarterly for a year to review their portfolios and reinforce the concepts learned.

Families will be encouraged to continue to engage their children in investment education and contributions. In this way, the program will continue to pay off in the future for our children and our communities.

Thank you in advance for your contribution! Brown Like Me has made a huge difference in the lives of Black children in the Treasure Valley, and this will continue to build their confidence and self-sufficiency.

All money raised will benefit the youth of Brown Like Me; the Boise State University Black Alumni Chapter is volunteering its time for this program. There is no tie to a brokerage house; this is why an advisor-agnostic investment platform will be used for the program.

Brown Like Me  is an Idaho organization that provides mentoring, mirroring, and safe spaces for the Treasure Valley’s Black youth. We hold monthly social and educational activities ranging from hair care to cooking to African and Step dancing classes.
