About LEWMO: https://www.lewmo.org
LEWMO is a community-based organization in Lucky Summer Ward in Nairobi, Kenya that focuses on sustainable waste management and empowering local communities. Their work tackles the pressing challenges of waste pollution by turning waste into value. They engage and educate the community about proper waste disposal, recycling, and the economic opportunities hidden in what many consider trash. With LEWMO, 120 youths were employed.
Through their initiatives, they create cleaner environments, reduce pollution, and generate economic opportunities. Their programs enable community members to participate in waste management processes while earning small rewards for their efforts, creating a sustainable cycle of empowerment and environmental stewardship.
Vision for the Buyback Center:
The Buyback Center is at the heart of LEWMO's mission to empower communities. Here’s how it works:
- Community members bring valuable recyclable waste, such as plastics and metals, to the center.
- They receive a small financial reward for the waste they collect.
- The center sorts, weighs, and stores the materials.
- These materials are sold at a higher price to recycling markets, generating revenue to sustain the program.
This center not only provides a cleaner environment but also creates stable employment for over 20 women, giving them the opportunity to support their families and improve their livelihoods. Moreover, it involves the entire community, educating people about waste management and showing them the economic potential of recycling.
The Challenge: Why We Need Your Help
Last December, we successfully built the Buyback Center with previous funding, but due to government regulations, it was taken down as it was within a 30-meter riparian zone. This setback was devastating, but we are determined to rebuild.
We have found a new and approved location to rebuild the center, but we need your support to purchase this land. Thankfully, we were able to salvage construction materials, such as bricks and metal, which will help reduce rebuilding costs. However, purchasing the land is critical to restarting this vital project.
By donating, you’re not just supporting the construction of a building; you’re creating opportunities for women, families, and an entire community to thrive. Together, we can turn this setback into a success story for LEWMO and the people we serve.
Your support, no matter how small, brings us closer to rebuilding the Buyback Center. Let’s create a brighter future where waste is transformed into opportunity, and communities are empowered to take charge of their environment.
Donate today and be part of this life-changing initiative!
