In the midst of the world’s largest refugee camp, one young Rohingya activist and his volunteer team bring hope. They teach and empower more than 200 students each day.

More than 700,000 Rohingya were forced to flee Myanmar last August, driven out mercilessly and brutally by the military. Thousands were wounded, raped or killed on the run, and tens of thousands of children made it across the border without one or both of their parents.
919,000 Rohingya now live in shelters in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar. These tents and huts have become the world’s largest refugee camp. Myanmar refuses to offer any guarantees of safety or rights to the Rohingya and many expect that they won’t be able to safely return for years or decades. These families have no choice but to stay put.
An entire generation of children is now at risk of growing up in this refugee camp without being able to go to school. And this would mean a generation without hope and opportunities.
But one young Rohingya activist and educator won’t let this happen (name not mentioned here for his protection). Earlier this year, he took things into his own hands. With a budget of only $1,500, 0% office costs, and within only a few weeks he mobilized dozens of volunteers and started and is now running four schools and one “Empowerment Center”.
233 students from grade 1 to grade 8 now sit on the floors of these shelter schools each day but don’t seem to care about comfort as they eagerly absorb and treasure every bit of knowledge that comes their way. At the same time, youth come together in the Empowerment Center to pick up essential skills to transform their communities. They are taught leadership, creative thinking, harmony, peaceful coexistence, good communication, health care, child rights, women rights, human rights, and hygiene practices.
What they need now to keep going is money to pay for curriculum books for 400 students across 8 grades, and a small stipend for the six volunteer teachers.
$10 purchase urgently needed curriculum sets for three students
$119 allow one volunteer teacher to work one month full time
$178 purchase curriculum sets for an entire class of 50 students
$714 allow all six volunteer teachers to teach for one month full time!

BUDGET
Curriculum book sets:
Cost - $3.6 (= 300 Taka) per curriculum set
Need - 8 classes (grade 1- 8) with 50 students each = 400 students (1 curriculum set each)
Total cost - $1,427.7 (=120,000 Taka)
Volunteer teachers’ stipends:
Cost – $119 (=10,000 taka) per teacher per month
Need – 6 teachers for 12 months = 72 months of teacher stipends
Total cost - $ 8,566 (=720,000 Taka)
Grand total: $ 9,993.7
