The pandemic of COVID-19 has impacted many lives but it has had a huge affect on hourly employees in the hospitality industry, especially those that are employed by independent/small businesses such as ourselves. Shilling Canning Company is a family-owned restaurant that opened in July of 2019. We have faced many challenging times in the few months we have been opened but no one image we would be going through what we are going now.
Having to lay off the majority of our wonderful staff was one of the hardest things we've ever had to do. These are people that not only work for us but have become part of our family. Many travel over an hour to be at work every day, others have small children to take care of, sick parents, student loans and other financial responsibilities. Our industry operates on small margins, and being a new restaurant we have operated on an extremely tight margin so having to lay off many of them was heartbreaking. We want to be able to take care of them.
Everything is uncertain, policies change every day and it quite frankly just sucks all around. It hurts, we try to keep a positive mind and move forward, but this is heavy and is weighing on all of us. My husband Reid, and I own the restaurant and we will figure out a way to make it through. It took us 6 years to get our doors open, we have moved mountains to get where we are and we won't stop now. We will apply for all the financial relief we can get, but the problem is that we don't know how long this process will take, how much relief will be available and who will really be able to benefit from it.
Our staff needs help NOW, they needs their paycheck, they need to feeds their families and take care of their health, so the best we can do aside from continuing to offer take out and delivery to keep a few employed, is to call out for your help and support. To give back to the our community. We are a neighborhood, family-owned restaurant. We know your name, we call you a friend, and we truly need our friends now.
