Emma's Global Glimpse Trip

Donation protected
My name is Emma.  I am 17, and a junior at Oakland School for the Arts, a public charter school in Oakland, California where I have studied Visual Arts and Production Design for the past six years.  I have recently been offered an amazing opportunity. I was nominated to apply and then accepted to participate in a youth leadership development program called Global Glimpse . This is a 21 day summer program  designed to provide students with a powerful hands-on cross-cultural experience that cultivates leadership, self-exploration and global citizenship.  The program pinpoints select students in public schools who demonstrate courage, compassion, and commitment as well as leadership potential.  The program I will be travelling with will take 20 students to Esteli,  a small town in rural Nicaragua.   We leave on July 26th! Prior to the trip, each student is required to attend academic seminars.  These seminars and the actual trip will educate the student in the following areas:

 CULTURE
Students will reflect on how culture shapes the way people live and why it is important to preserve local culture and the challenges and importance of doing so in a globalized world.

HISTORY
Students will explore how history affects a country, its people, and the country’s relationship with other countries.

EDUCATION
Students will explore the relationship between poverty, development and education and identify the barriers to providing quality education in a developing country.

POVERTY
Students will see and feel the impact that poverty has on a place and its people and have the opportunity to explore ways to break the cycle of poverty using the framework of the 5Ps (People, place, politics, past, peace).

POLITICS
Students will learn about the challenges of governing a country with low resources, lack of education, lack of infrastructure, corruption and dependence on foreign aid. Students will explore how politics affects all of the other themes.

GLOBAL BUSINESS
Students will learn how businesses can impact the development of impoverished countries and the importance of sustainable business practices in a globalized economy.

AID AND DEVELOPMENT Students will gain insight into the challenges of creating and managing a sustainable aid project. Students will explore different projects and organizations and discuss how aid can have both a positive and negative impact on a country.

Our trip will offer us many unique experiences. Some examples:  we will shadow a local high school student for a day,  work as a local on a family farm, sell produce at the local market, teach an English language class,  work on community development projects, and learn to live on $1 a day.

I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I am to be given this opportunity. I believe it will be a life-changing event for me. I have been awarded a $1,000 scholarship but need to raise the remaining $3,500 on my own. I sincerely hope you choose to support my campaign, however, even if you can't contribute you can still help! Please share this link with your friends and family to help!

Thank you so much for joining me on this incredible journey!
