Emma's Senior Project for C-diff

Donation protected
UPDATE AS OF MARCH 19, 2020 : Unfortunately due to the COVID-19 virus, the race has been cancelled. The township notified me earlier this week that all public event reservations at its parks have been cancelled, and because of timing we will not able to reschedule. If you would still like to support the the project all the money donated here will go 100% towards a donation to the C-Diff foundation.  Any donation amount is appreciated. Again, thank you so much for your support, it means a lot to me.

Hello, my name is Emma Householder and I'm a student at Seneca Valley Senior High School. For my senior project I chose to host a 5k in order to raise awareness and money for Clostridium difficile. Clostridium difficile or C-diff for short is a disease that can be contracted in hospitals.

"Clostridium difficile (also known as C. diff) is a bacterium that causes diarrhea and colitis (an inflammation of the colon). It’s estimated to cause almost half a million illnesses in the United States each year. About 1 in 5 patients who get C. diff will get it again. Within a month of diagnosis, 1 in 11 people over age 65 died of a healthcare-associated C. diff infection." (CDC).

C-diff is contagious and can be caused by recent hospital visits, being 65 or older, a weakened immune system, and a previous infection as well. (CDC). With all this being said c-diff is very dangerous and life threatening to many people who contract it.

The reason I chose c-diff to base my 5k off of is because my grandma passed away from it in February 2018. This experience was one of the hardest things I had to go through in my life. She first went into the hospital for a heart attack in December of 2017 she had surgery because the  heart attack had weakened her heart. After that she was placed in the ICU because she was in critical condition. She was supposed to be in ICU for only a few days instead she stayed there for many weeks after. The second week of December, my family was told that she had c-diff. She stayed at the hospital for a few weeks until she was transferred to a hospital that was better equipped to handle her needs. She was transferred there in the middle of January of 2018. I also spent my time on the weekends going down to visit her in the hospital. Upon getting into her room my Dad and I had to use hand sanitizer and put on gloves, gowns, and masks to help us avoid being infected. When I visited her it was hard to see her in that condition she was happy to see me but at the same time she was tired and the infection had taken over making her weak. The last time I saw her was a week before she passed away and I'm glad I got to see her before I was not able to anymore. She passed away on February 8, 2018.

I chose c-diff to donate money to because if I can help the c-diff foundation in any way that would mean a lot to me. I had a family member impacted by this disease and if donating money helps them with help finding a cure then that would be great.  You can help me by coming to North Boundary Park on March 22nd at 9:00 am to run, jog, or walk for my 5k!

All you have to do is sign up and bring $20, if you can not make it you can donate to my gofundme page as well. Thank you so much for the support and I'll see you there!
