I’m preparing to celebrate the 17th Birthday of my daughter, Emma, during the month of July. Emma passed away on April 7, 2019 at the age of 15. Emma has touched so many people's lives and continues to do so. She was an advocate for kids with cancer as she knew how important it is for people to know that childhood cancer is not rare. Emma was loving, compassionate and enthusiastic. She loved music and dance, but her biggest passion was gymnastics. She was a competitive gymnast until the age of 12, when she was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, an aggressive type of bone cancer. Emma had to have her right leg amputated but despite that, she was determined to chase her dream of returning back to gymnastics and dance.
I decided that it would be right to celebrate her birthday every day of this month of July. I listened to her guidance and I decided that during the month of July, myself, Lizi and Emil (when possible) will bike/walk 5km every day in Emma’s memory and also to give back. My intention is to raise awareness for the families with children that are going through cancer treatment ,and for those families who have lost their children. July is also bereaved parents awareness month and I want to acknowledge all those families too. We got so much help and care during Emma’s treatment and after, from friends, family and people we don’t even know. We also got help from two amazing charities, both of which helps families of children with life threatening illnesses. This year I will bike/walk to raise money for both of them as our way to GIVE BACK ,and also to contribute to this important cause. These two charities brought so much happiness to us during the hardest times. They created memories that will stay with us “forever and always” as Emma used to say and they are near and dear to Emma’s heart. ❤️

MILLION DOLLAR SMILES and
HEATER’s HEROES
MILLION DOLLAR SMILES is a charity who was founded by Anna Lopes. They build playgrounds into the backyards of children affected by life threatening illnesses. They built about 80 playgrounds per summer, and they also have their annual bear drive before the holidays. Emma loved volunteering to build playgrounds for kids. Every time, when she arrived home, she would tell me how rewarding it was! During the month of July , I will share pictures and stories from playground builds that she was part of. She took us with her and we loved it. Now we are part of the volunteer team, and we keep bringing smiles to these children, along with amazing people. Last summer we built a few playgrounds in Emma’s memory. I have some beautiful stories to share with you during this month.
HEATER'S HEROES is a charity founded by Mike Strange of Niagara Falls, which also brings huge help to families with children affected by cancer. We were introduced to them two years ago, when Alex Luey, Emma’s special friend , told Mike about Emma. He invited us to their special event which celebrates all of those kids, every year in August. I will also share pictures and beautiful memories along the way.
This July, in Emma's memory, please wrap a little gift with love and golden ribbon and consider donating it to a child who is going through challenging times, or to a family who has lost their child. It really makes a difference for these families. We were one of them, and we are forever grateful for the love and support shown to us.
The amount of money raised will be equally shared among these two charities.
This is about spreading love and making this world a better place. It is about LOVE and COMPASSION. It is about being GRATEFUL and not take anything for granted.
