Hi, I'm Emily and I am an admin assistant at Milwaukee's urban land trust, the River Revitalization Foundation as well as an adoption counselor at the WI Humane Society. I have a Sociology degree from UWSP and I was working on an HR degree before the cancer came but now school isn't as important to me. I'm okay with that.
I've had problems in my left knee for most of my life. In December 2015 I had some scans done to see what was going on. The doctor originally thought that it was a torn meniscus, but the scans revealed a bone tumor. On Christmas Eve of 2015 I received a call informing me that there was a chance I might have osteosarcoma, an extremely rare cancer. This was confirmed after 2 biopsies on January 11, 2016. When I was first diagnosed I had stage 2A osteosarcoma in my left femur.
The cancer returned twice last year after the rounds of chemo and initial surgery. I now have stage 4 terminal osteosarcoma and there's 7 nodules in my lungs. They are not removable since the largest one is close to my heart and because I had a total of 3 surgeries in 2016 to remove 3 confirmed cancerous lung spots. If they remove more of the lung tissue it will negatively impact my health.
I am raising money to help with bills, rent, my travel dreams, and car repairs (I have a 2001 Jeep cherokee with 270,000 miles and I need to keep it in tip top shape to continue driving myself to doctor's appointments). I am working very PT, about 10 hours a month, and receiving social security but that barely covers my monthly expenses much less unexpected costs (like my jeep getting stolen a couple months ago, it was returned but I had to pay $400 in repairs since I only had liability.)
I will be doing a clinical trial in March 2017 since the standard treatments (surgery and chemo) were ineffective. I am optimistic about the future, but also realistic. Any amount is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your generosity, I am so lucky to have such a great support team and so many people who care about me. I love you too!
