Healing Garden for Family Violence

Donation protected
Sometimes the best healing is found in watching something take on life.

Founded in 2003 in Collin County, Texas, Emily's Place provides a unique supportive housing community for women and their children who are homeless as a result of family violence. Emily’s Place is not an emergency shelter. It is the bridge between emergency housing and independence. Residents and their children may stay for up to 24 months to ensure they have the time and support they need to attain their highest personal potential through the development of their abilities and the healing of their hearts.

Studies have shown that gardens provide healing. For Emily's Place a garden can provide healing as well as unlock access to nutritionally rich foods that may otherwise be unaffordable. A garden in the home will play a key role in improving children’s knowledge, understanding and curiosity about whole foods. This will allow their little bodies to thrive both at home and at school. They will engage in hands-on-learning as they plant a seed, watch it grow, care and nuture it, until it is ready to be served on their plate.

Perhaps most importantly, the residents of Emily's Place will witness the ongoing cycle of life, discover a side of self-sufficiency previously unknown to them, and will watch something grow, flourish, and benefit themselves and other residents--they will discover healing through natural observation. Coming from a past of hurt and destruction, these residents--mothers and children--will be able to reestablish a healthy positivity, hopefulness, and confidence in self-ability. Helping in this emotional growth is a key part of helping these women to transform their lives and break the cycle of domestic violence.

An indoor tower garden  provides fresh vegetables year round and is a smart choice, both environmentally and economically. From an economic standpoint, a tower garden would help the facility save an estimated $75-$150 a week on fresh vegetables.

Please help to fund the healing of the mind and body of the residents of Emily's Place through the purchase of three tower gardens.
