Emily’s Borneo Expedition

Hi my name is Emily and I have recently volunteered for an expedition in June 2020 with my school. I will be spending my summer in Borneo with Camps International for a month after my exams in year 11 and I will be doing a wide range of different activities to help and hopefully make a change to the local community in Borneo.
Currently, Borneo suffers with many issues, including poverty; with many children working to assist their families and this takes away their opportunity of furthering their education. Another significant issue Borneo faces at the moment is deforestatation to make way for palm oil plantations. This does not only contribute to global warming but it’s also destroying the habitat for the endangered orangutan among other species. This is a huge problem as the orangutan is a very important animal to Borneo.
To help alleviate these issues:
Schools:
I will be helping to provide schools with facilities such as kitchens - This will often provide the only meal the child will eat that day.
I will also be helping to build kindergartens - This will improve the early years of education, helping them not to fall behind. Also while doing this I will get to spend time with the children and educate them myself.
Reforestation programmes:
I will be helping with reforestation programmes - This will replenish forests affected by commercial deforestation and provides communities with their own crops. This also means I will be helping with the rehabilitation of orangutans’.
Community:
Toilet block installations - Many homes don’t have toilet facilities. Therefore to reduce hygiene and heath care issues I will be helping provide villages with clean and modern toilets.
I will also be helping to build bridges - This enables a safer access for children to school.
I will be taking part in beach clean ups - A huge amount of plastic and waste ends up on shores so I will be collecting it so it can be made into jewellery to then sell.
I will be fundraising to help make this possible and I hope you will help me to make this opportunity of a life time become a reality!
