Em's Physical Therapy Service Trip!

Donation protected
As many of you may, or may not, know, I came across an awesome opportunity after my first semester of Physical Therapy (PT) school at Washington Unviersity in St. Louis. I was able to travel to Zacapa, Guatemala to participate in a PT service trip through the program Hearts in Motion with third year students who were just one semester away from finishing PT school and two WashU PT alumna.

Traditionally, the trip is reserved for students in their third and final year. Fortunately for me, an opportunity arose where I was able to take someone's place and for a highly reduced price. I found on my birthday last year that I would be able to go- and what a great birthday present that was!

This year, during the spirit of the holidays and giving, I am asking for your help and support. I have decided to venture back to Guatemala next year (2015-2016) during my third year and am organizing and leading the trip! While I didn't know much at the time last year, I was very moved by the experience and knew I would want to return when I was in my last year.

However, this time, the price tag is not as friendly. So, I am asking for your help financially to help cover the program costs and cost of the flight as being in graduate school is so, extremely expensive already!

If you are unable to help support financially, we also take donations with us to help better serve the people in need of rehabilition services in Guatemala. These can include items new or used such as braces, splints, crutches, walkers, shoes, etc. Hearts in Motion Rehabilition team is especially in need of the following:

NMES (portable muscle stimulators)
Kinesiotape
Low temperature plastics such as aquaplast for splinting
Electrodes
Cast Saw
“Soft-cast” casting material
Knee immobilizers

Any positive thoughts and prayers for the trip are also VERY needed! The last time I traveled to Guatemala, I knew nearly nothing about PT. Now, this time, I will be nearly finished with my degree and hope I can use my newly acquired skills to truly help and serve the people in Guatemala who are under- or uninsured, but will truly need the encouragement from all of you. I can only hope that this next time I am able to see my growth as a budding clinician and help people like the wonderful ones we served last year.

Thank you all in advance so, so much for your support in any way that you are able!

Love,
Emily
