Emile's Post-Commutation Transition

Our friend Emile DeWeaver received a magnificent Christmas gift: the commutation of his 67-year prison sentence. As he prepares to stand before the parole board in June, we're looking ahead to his fall release and ensuring he has the support -- emotional, financial, and otherwise -- to transition to life on the outside where things have vastly changed from when he was 18.
In Emile's own words:
On April 12th, I'll be 39 years old, and my greatest gift is the fulfillment of a five-year hope: that I will leave prison before I turn 40. I've learned that nobody does anything amazing alone. I changed my life and earned a commutation, but I succeeded because you lifted me up and supported me. You accepted my collect calls, sent letters of support to the Governor, mentored me, celebrated me and most of all, you saw me. Thank you.
I'm ecstatic. But with this miracle also comes a lot of scary challenges. I've been incarcerated since I was 18 years old, and when I leave San Quentin, I'll leave with $200 and the clothes I wear that day. But I'll need money for clothes, a laptop, public transportation, hygiene, first months rent, and most importantly cheesecake.
