Emerson parents Leonard, Ingrid, and Liz are managing this fund* to support our teachers who strike in cooperation with our teachers.
Funds will be distributed equally among staff members who otherwise could not afford to strike and/or volunteer at our Solidarity School. The majority of our teachers are young and do not have savings to support themselves while on strike. Our teachers are taking evening classes or working second jobs while teaching. They cannot afford to strike, but they are committed to improving conditions for our kids.
Our Solidarity School is SAFE, providing FOOD, and EDUCATION with our volunteer leaders...most of whom are familiar faces and know our kids well. We had ~30 kids on day one and 56 kids on Day 2 at our awesome strike school! This is what community looks like!

* Organizers Ingrid Hogle, Leonard Liu, and Liz Delph are all parents of students at Emerson Elementary in Oakland. This fund is being managed via a personal checking account at a local credit union which is being used solely for this purpose. Leonard is the account owner. Ingrid is a co-owner. Liz is not a co-owner and has no financial interests at this credit union. Ingrid was impressed Liz's work as our school's PTA treasurer, so she asked Liz to be a disinterested third party to this Strike Fund. Liz has been given permission by the credit union to view and audit all funds in this account. Liz is tracking all donations and providing this information to the Emerson Strike Captain, Allison Grill, who will ensure that funds are distributed appropriately...with oversight from Leonard, Ingrid and Liz.
Funds will go first to support non-OEA (teacher union) staff who have chosen to honor the strike by volunteering their time at our Solidarity School but who, unlike our OEA teachers, are not eligible to apply for loans or funds being collected by OEA to support striking teachers at this GoFundMe site: https://www.gofundme.com/striking-oakland-teachers. If there are any remaining funds in our Emerson Strike Fund after helping our non-OEA staff who are generously volunteering their time at our Solidarity School, these funds will be distributed among striking teachers from Emerson Elementary who request such support in an effort to save the OEA-organized striking-oakland-teacher funds for teachers from other schools who need support.
