 Right now, thousands of First Nations citizens are living in evacuation centers, hotel rooms, and gymnasiums far from home. Wildfires have swept through more than two dozen communities across British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario this year, forcing families to leave everything behind.

 In British Columbia, the Okanagan Indian Band lost roughly 230 homes when the Bradley Creek wildfire tore through their community near Vernon, destroying generations of family history along with irreplaceable cultural artifacts. In northern Ontario, Namaygoosisagagun (Collins) First Nation was destroyed, its 60 residents evacuated by boat. In Whitesand First Nation, 470 people were placed under mandatory evacuation as fire closed in. Families from Neskantaga and Cat Lake First Nations were flown hundreds of miles to hotels in Toronto and Barrie because northern communities ran out of room to host them.

 As of August 5, Indigenous Services Canada reports 27 First Nations affected by wildfire this season and nearly 2,927 people still displaced. British Columbia has the highest number of evacuated communities in the country, with an estimated 1,100 to 1,200 people displaced across nine communities, though many of these are partial evacuation orders or affect smaller, remote populations. Since April, more than 8,200 First Nations citizens have been evacuated at some point. Many are children and young adults, far from the land, language, and ceremony that ground their communities.
