As many of you know, Sophia's dad Ahmed El Ahmar was in a car accident a month ago and died September 27th in France (where he lived). Sophia and I dropped everything to be with him in what turned out to be his final days. We stayed for two weeks and had just returned to the states three days before he died.
It was so painful to have to leave Ahmed, knowing that we might not see him againl. We never expected he would pass away just three days later. Sophia needs to go to her dad’s funeral and mourn with her Moroccan family. I need it as well, and we are taking Max. We hope to leave for Morocco on Monday.
It is very difficult for me to ask for money, but many friends have reached out and generously offered to help both my family and Ahmed’s if I gave them a way to contribute.
I'm hoping to cover the cost of our expensive, last minute plane tickets. We would also like to help Ahmed’s family with their financial burdens. They don't have many resources and this loss has destroyed them.
Ahmed is the second son that the family has lost (Ahmed's brother died of meningitis at age 15). Sophia's grandma Jemaa has had a very difficult life. She suffered debilitating injuries in a car accident many years ago but still continues to work despite the crippling pain she lives with.
Jemaa has been so generous with me. She always welcomed me, my family and my friends into her home, even after Ahmed and I separated. I can’t ease her grief, but I hope we can ease her financial burdens.
Ahmed’s sister Imane anticipates the funeral expenses will be around $2,000 or more. Traditionally the family will welcome potentially hundreds of friends and relatives who will come to pay their respects, mourn, and eat. It is a huge obligation for the family that lasts several days.
Right now I'm asking for $4500, $2000 of which I hope to give to Ahmed's family. I can't ask for this money without feeling a sense of obligation to those who are helping us. Please know any money I use to defer our expenses, I plan to pay forward to others in need when we are back in a position to do so.
