COVID-19 Emergency Shelter for Seniors

Ms. Delbra Taylor and Mr. Norbert Vaughn, Sr. aka “Pops”  are both 68-years-old and have been unhoused on the streets of East Oakland, CA since 2014. They live unhoused in their cars next to the Denny’s off Hegenberger Road in East Oakland-- right next to the 45 FEMA trailers Governor Newsom deployed to Oakland and a minute away from hotel rooms that sit vacant since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. A minute away from the County of Alameda and City of Oakland contracted hotels for COVID-19 quarantine and shelter. They have not been offered temporary shelter or permanent housing. Love and Justice in the Streets and The East Oakland Collective  paid for the seniors to get a reprieve from living on the streets and protect themselves from COVID-19 for one week. We need your help to keep their emergency shelter for the duration of the shelter in place orders.

For the past week Ms. Taylor and Mr. Vaughn have had access to a sink, shower, bed, fridge, electricity and peace of mind. Mr. Vaughn has arapathy, cirrhosis of the liver, traits of parkinson's disease, sciatica, herniated disc in his back, high blood pressure, arthritis and his leukemia is in remission. Ms. Taylor is pre-diabetic, has high blood pressure, back and kidney problems. From living in her car for so long, Ms. Taylor is suffering from lack of circulation to her legs.

Being in a hotel room this past week has allowed our beloved seniors to store groceries, stretch their aching limbs, use the bathroom properly, take medications as prescribed, wash their hands and finally, get a full nights sleep.

Where the government has failed these seniors, the community will not. Their hotel is paid for until Monday, April 20, 11 AM -- help us extend their stay! Nightly rate is $107 (includes tax).

Ms. Taylor and Mr. Vaughn recently spoke about their experiences and the need for emergency housing NOW in the #NoVacancyCA  press conference on April 15, 2020, demanding that vacant hotel rooms across the state of California be opened for emergency housing for ALL unhoused individuals and families.
