Urgent Emergency Hurricane Relief for the Indigenous Mayangna Community in Nicaragua

With the coronavirus pandemic already ravaging communities; the people of Nicaragua have suffered another devastating natural disaster.

Hurricane Iota, which has been identified as the strongest hurricane in history to hit the region, arrived on November 16, 2020 following Hurricane Eta which made landfall two weeks prior.

This catastrophic event has prompted evacuations and caused flooding and landslides that have caused power outages, and destroyed homes, crops and livelihoods causing people to cluster together as they seek shelter. This will unfortunately and undoubtedly contribute to surges in covid-19 cases.

The hurricanes have taken the lives of young children and adults alike who were swept away or buried due to the flooding and landslides. In addition, what we have seen as a result is the suffering of families left without food and shelter.

According to the Reuters News Agency, it was reported that more than 130 people have been killed by hurricane Eta and at least 40 people have been killed by hurricane Iota. In addition, rescuers continue to recover more dead bodies of adults and children alike buried during landslides.

Around 160,000 people have been forced to flee as they seek shelter along the Nicaragua’s Caribbean Coast where aid workers believe that this emergency could lead to a fresh outbreak of COVID 19.

About the Mayangna:

This is more than a general campaign. As a native Mayangna, I am devastated to see how these natural disasters have impacted my community and my people.

There are nine territories in the Indigenous Mayangna Nation State. Unfortunately, all of them were affected by hurricanes Eta and Iota creating a dire situation in regards to farming and food sources.

Although poverty has been rampant, hurricanes Eta and Iota have left a new level of destruction and anguish in their wake.

Your support will help them survive, while they rebuilt their houses and start working on their farms to plant new crops.

Our Goal:

We kindly request your help to raise $15,000 to support 90 families with immediate needs, such as food, housing, and access to clean water through partnership and coordination with local indigenous NGOs and the Moravian Church.

Please share this information with your friends and others for better networking.
